Education plays a vital role in creating an inclusive culture in the raw materials sector

In the quest for equality, there's no finish line. Let's keep running until every voice is heard, every dream is achievable, and every opportunity is within reach.

This quote inspires Mariaelena Murphy, M.A. Education Researcher & Portfolio Manager in RIC Leoben, to break new ground into engineering education in the raw materials sector. Undoubtfully, an educator’s interdisciplinary professional journey is invaluable, yet what actually changes the game is the genuine passion to inspire students not only to equip with the technical skills needed for success, but also to cultivate a deep sense of inclusivity and responsibility. Therefore, Mariaelena Murphy is a game changer in the RM education landscape!

Q.: The mining-metallurgical sector is a particularly demanding professional area with a profile that supports modern technological trends yet, identified more by its conservative structure in terms of administration and operations. How/why did you choose this sector as a career path?

Mariaelena Murphy: Before joining the Resources Innovation Center, Montanuniversiät Leoben in the function of ‘education researcher & portfolio manager’, I spent 17 years as a senior lecturer of international business with a specialisation in management and corporate/social responsibility. I moved from the Netherlands to Austria and four and a half years ago, I started my journey into engineering education and the raw materials sector. It was a natural progression driven by my passion for education and the opportunities of blending tradition with innovation while emphasising ethical practices.

Drawing from my background, I’m keenly aware of the importance of responsible business conduct and sustainable practices in today's global landscape. The raw materials sector presents a unique opportunity to integrate these principles into its operations, ensuring that progress is achieved in a socially and environmentally responsible manner. Both education and industry in mining and metallurgy have historically been male-dominated, but there's a notable shift as more women enter these fields, bringing diverse perspectives and skills, reflecting a broader trend towards inclusivity and recognising women's valuable contributions.

In the projects we undertake I am dedicated to promoting this aspect and the current and future role of women in this field. Utilising my background expertise in international business and social responsibility, I aim to enrich the educational experience within engineering studies, also on a European level, through collaborative projects. I believe in fostering a curriculum that not only equips students with the technical skills needed for success but also instils a deep sense of inclusivity and responsibility

Q.: Tell us a little about your experience as a professional in the mining/metallurgical sector. What challenge(s) have you encountered, hitherto, in your work environment?

Mariaelena Murphy: As a professional in the engineering education sector, I am navigating a field that has traditionally been male-dominated. Despite this historical trend, I've witnessed a significant shift in recent years towards greater diversity and inclusion. However, challenges persist, particularly concerning the public perception of the industry and its attractiveness for female students.

One of the challenges I've encountered is overcoming stereotypes and biases associated with the mining/metallurgy sector. Historically, this industry has been perceived as rugged and masculine, which can deter female students from pursuing studies and careers in this field. Breaking down these stereotypes and highlighting the diverse opportunities within mining and metallurgy is essential for attracting and retaining talent from all backgrounds.

Additionally, addressing the gender imbalance in the classroom, workplace and wider society, remains an imperative and powerful tool. While progress has been made in increasing female enrolment and representation, there is still work to be done to create an inclusive environment where all students feel supported and valued.

Q.: What we acknowledge and welcome in recent years, is an attempt of the mining industry to set up a direct and meaningful communication channel with the modern societies that are more aware of the sector's pros and cons. In this context, albeit at a gradual pace, women are entrusted with executive level jobs. What are your thoughts about inclusion and diversity in the mining environment?

Mariaelena Murphy: As someone passionate about fostering inclusive environments, I find the recent efforts of the mining industry to establish direct communication with modern societies encouraging. Embracing diversity not only brings fresh perspectives, enhances decision-making, and fosters innovation but also strengthens community relationships and builds trust.

By prioritising inclusion, the mining sector can demonstrate its commitment to responsible and sustainable practices, which are essential for long-term success and positive social impact. The gradual inclusion of women in executive roles is a positive step, but there is still much work to be done to ensure equal opportunities for all underrepresented groups, including minorities and indigenous communities.

Creating an inclusive mining environment requires proactive measures such as inclusive hiring practices, mentorship programmes, and ongoing diversity training to foster a culture of respect and equality at all levels of the organisation. I am personally excited to play a small part in this transformation from the educational side and as someone who values diversity and inclusion, it is encouraging to see the progress being made and committed to contributing to a more inclusive future for the mining sector.

Q.: What are the «critical raw materials» for a woman in this sector to maintain the difficult but essential work-life balance?

Mariaelena Murphy: Maintaining a work-life balance is crucial for anyone in any industry sector, but for women, there are certain «critical raw materials» that are particularly essential. Firstly, support networks are vital. Having a strong support system, whether it's family, friends, or colleagues who understand the demands of the industry, can provide invaluable encouragement and assistance in navigating the challenges of balancing work and personal life.
